Medicare Supplements are not Medicare. Medicare Supplements are other insurance policies meant to add to your Original Medicare coverage.
Original Medicare was not designed to pay for all of your health care costs. It has many gaps in coverage that Medicare does not pay for, such as coinsurance and deductibles. You can choose to fill those gaps with Medicare Supplement plans.
Again, these policies are not run by the federal Medicare program. Most Medicare Supplements are run by private companies.
There are many different kinds of Medicare Supplements. The most common Medicare Supplements are Medigap Policies. Because they are so common, sometimes all Medicare Supplements are referred to as “Medigaps.” This is not technically accurate.
